We have the most wonderful window depicting the sailing of the Mayflower in 1620.
It was originally installed in the Sherwell Congregational Church
The window depicts the scene on the Barbican, when the Pilgrim Fathers (and Mothers) boarded the “MAYFLOWER”, on 6th September 1620 after being “kindly entertained and courteously used by divers friends there dwelling”. The scene is the Barbican pier, still in use today, with the quaint and picturesque town skirting the harbour in the distance. The tower of our parish church, St Andrew’s (eleventh century) can be seen on the skyline.
John Bradford, the leader of the Pilgrim Fathers, is bidding good-bye to the pastor of the Plymouth congregation, who, with other Christian friends standing behind, have come to take leave of the visitors and bid them God-speed on their long and perilous voyage. The ”MAYFLOWER” can be seen riding the waters. An inscription reads: “Happy is that people, whose God is Lord. Aye, call it holy ground, the soil where they first trod. They left unstained what there they found, freedom to worship God”
This beautiful window, which started life at Kings Street Methodist Chapel is now here at Sherwell United Church after being at Wesley Church on The Crescent and Colebrook Church Plympton
